Endometriosis
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis, a persistent gynecological condition, involves the growth of tissue resembling the uterine lining outside the uterine cavity. As an estrogen-dependent condition, these ectopic foci proliferate and bleed concurrently with menstruation, leading to diverse symptoms such as abdominal pain, menstrual irregularities, and infertility. Notably, the severity and stage of the disease do not necessarily correlate with symptom intensity. Women with extensive disease may experience minimal or no symptoms. In contrast, those with minimal or mild disease might endure intense pain. An exception to this pattern is deep infiltrating endometriosis.
Symptoms of Endometriosis
- Lower abdominal pain, especially during menstruation
- Pain during intercourse
- Menstrual irregularities
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Urinary or bowel issues
- Infertility
What is adenomyosis?
Adenomyosis is a related condition where endometrial cells infiltrate the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium). This can lead to thickening of the uterine wall and similar symptoms to endometriosis. Women with adenomyosis may also experience severe pain during menstruation and potentially throughout their entire menstrual cycle.
Diagnosis
We emphasize precise and comprehensive diagnostics during our consultation to understand your unique situation. Diagnosing endometriosis and adenomyosis can be challenging, as symptoms often resemble those of other gynecological conditions. Our diagnostic procedures include:
- Detailed medical history. We investigate your medical history and symptoms.
- Physical examination. Assessing the lower abdomen and other relevant areas.
- Imaging techniques. Ultrasound and, if necessary, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) can provide clues to endometriosis and adenomyosis lesions.
- Laparoscopy. In some cases, operative laparoscopy is required to visualize and confirm endometriosis and adenomyosis tissue.
